Swedish researchers have found that men who sit for less than half the time during work have a 20% lower risk of prostate cancer than men who sit all day.
A recent study published in the British Journal of Cancer is the largest ever to investigate the links between exercise and prostate cancer. The study involved over 45,000 men aged between 45 and 79 and looked at how likely men where to be diagnosed with prostate cancer within a 10 year period compared to the amount of physical activity they took.
The researchers found that more active men were less likely to develop prostate cancer and that exercise greatly affected the chances of getting prostate cancer. Men who walked or cycled for over an hour a day had a 14% lower risk than men who walked or cycled only 20 to 40 minutes. Walking or cycling for longer reduced the risk by a further 7% for every half hour extra they exercised, up to a maximum of two hours.
